I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what motivates us to make change recently. Some say it takes only 21 days to create a new habit. However, I believe it depends on, firstly the individual, and secondly how deep the habit is embedded in our lives. According to an article published in Scientific America it can take anything from 18-254 days with people in the survey reporting that it takes an around 66 days to create 1 of 3 new habits.

My own experiences have been varied. It took some years and many attempts to give up smoking, which I finally did in my early 40’s. What finally motivated me? I was scheduled for a medical procedure that required a general anesthetic. I read that being a smoker would increase the risks I faced. It took much longer to create new eating and exercise habits, yet other things took me no time at all.
Why the differences?
Firstly, motivation could be defined as the inner desire or willingness to do something. It can stem from a variety of sources, including:
Intrinsic Motivation: meaning from within yourself. Driven by personal satisfaction, enjoyment, or a sense of purpose.
Extrinsic Motivation: arising from external factors such as rewards, recognition, or consequences.
Social Motivation: a desire to meet social norms.
Importantly, it is not static and what motivates you can change dependent on what is happening in your life at the time, your goals and ambitions, any challenges you are facing, what support you have around you, and importantly your values and beliefs.
What can help you maintain your motivation?
· Set clear goals,
· Find Purpose,
· Celebrate your progress,
· Embrace learning and growth,
· Accept setbacks as part of your journey and move on, and importantly,
· Don't be afraid to seek support and ask for help.
